India’s Lok Sabha discusses arrest of fishermen in Lanka

Lok SabhaThe issue of 45 Indian fishermen in the custody of the Sri Lankan Navy was discussed in India’s Lok Sabha yesterday.

K Ashok Kumar of the AIADMK told the Lok Sabha that 45 fishermen are in the custody of the Sri Lankan Navy, the PTI news agency reported.

“Along with boats, they have to be released. There has to be a permanent solution to this,” he said, adding, the Centre should intervene so that the fishermen are released by Sri Lanka.

Besides, he also demanded the release of Rs 1,520 crore for deep sea fishing.

“The Centre should immediately release funds to the state for developing deep sea fishing,” he said.

V Elumalai (AIADMK) demanded the release of Rs 2,000 crore from the Centre for a special housing scheme in Tamil Nadu which was affected by floods recently.

The government should also provide Rs 5,000 crore for meet food requirment of the state, he said.

Another AIADMK member S Rajendran said floods in Tamil Nadu have also affected the fishermen community.

About 65,000 fishermen has been affected, prawn culture industry has been negatively impacted.

“The Governemnt of India should send its team to the state to assess the damage and provide assistance to the fishermen community to the state,” he said.
