Heated exchange over failure to appoint envoy to UK

HarshaA heated exchange of words took place in Parliament today over the failure by the Government to appoint a new High Commissioner to the UK.

Opposition member Udaya Gammanpila asked the Government if it is not giving importance to Sri Lanka’s relations to the UK and if that is why a new High Commissioner has not yet been appointed to the vacant position.

Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva responded by insisting that Sri Lanka does see the UK as an important partner and that a suitable High Commissioner will be appointed soon.

He then went on to say that the former High Commissioner was mistreated and was even assaulted by a member of the former Government.

“We do no assault over diplomats like the way you did,” he told the opposition.

This led to some members of the opposition and the Deputy Foreign Minister engaging in a heated argument.

Former High Commissioner Dr. Chris Nonis had reportedly been assaulted by former MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena at a function when the Mahinda Rajapaksa led Government was in power. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. This answer by the Govt. M.P. does not reflect the seriousness of good governance. Does this assault
incident have anything to do with filling the Post, or
someone is out fishing for a henchman?

  2. As usual, the parties blame each other for their lapses and have “heated” arguments but the question remains un-answered and people are still in the dark as to why a High Commissioner has not been appointed to London!

  3. The assault of Dr.Nonis cannot be condoned at any time. That does not justify delay in filling the position in London. The greatest joke is the offer to Sangakkara and subsequent silence.

  4. Why the government is sidestepping the appointment of a High Commissioner by talking about past incidents. Haven’t we heard enough of that? You gave a pledge to the country assuring of a ”Yaha Paalanaya” good governance. So deliver what you promised without acting like clowns.!

  5. IIt may be possible, the President is delaying the appointment purposely until one of his children gets
    some training in foreign affairs.
