Opposition member Udaya Gammanpila asked the Government if it is not giving importance to Sri Lanka’s relations to the UK and if that is why a new High Commissioner has not yet been appointed to the vacant position.
Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva responded by insisting that Sri Lanka does see the UK as an important partner and that a suitable High Commissioner will be appointed soon.
He then went on to say that the former High Commissioner was mistreated and was even assaulted by a member of the former Government.
“We do no assault over diplomats like the way you did,” he told the opposition.
This led to some members of the opposition and the Deputy Foreign Minister engaging in a heated argument.
Former High Commissioner Dr. Chris Nonis had reportedly been assaulted by former MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena at a function when the Mahinda Rajapaksa led Government was in power. (Colombo Gazette)
