Opposition questions US interest on Sri Lanka

Dullas AlahapperumaThe opposition today questioned the keen interest the United States is having on Sri Lanka with several top US officials already having visited the country this year.

Opposition Parliamentarian Dullas Alahaperuma said that while the Government says it is following a middle line in Sri Lanka’s foreign policy, the reality does not seem to be the case.

Alahaperuma said that over the past four months top US officials including Nisha Biswal, Samantha Power and Thomas Shannon visited Sri Lanka and had talks with the Government.

“I the last four months there were six US officials who visited Sri Lanka. In the past six months so many US officials have not gone to any other country. Are they coming with a good intention,” he asked.

Alahaperuma noted that even after the August 17 Parliament elections, before the cabinet took oaths, three Ministers took oaths so they could have talks with US Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Biswal who was visiting the country at the time.

US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs (Designate) Thomas Shannon is the latest US official to visit Sri Lanka.

Speaking at an event today Shannon said Sri Lanka is an example of the power of citizens to reinvigorate their democracy, to retake control – through the ballot box – of their country’s trajectory, and to set a course to a brighter future.

He said the US now looks to Sri Lanka to also provide inspiration to others around the world, to show them how justice and compassion can overcome a difficult past and help create a stable and prosperous future, and strengthen a nation’s security, prosperity, and prestige. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Mr. Dullas, it appears though you were a Minister in the previous government, you seem to be ignorant of foreign policy. The final resolution of the UNHRC was jointly prepared by the US and Sri Lanka. In the interest of the peace of this country US wants the Sri Lankan government to implement the recommendation in the resolution (agreed by Sri Lanka). That is why the top officials of the US government visiting our country.

  2. Good Question. No country is interested in Sri Lanka to do Charity for nothing. The other term for Diplomatic Relations, is Business Development. India or China or Russia or US are not the sole proprietor of Sri Lanka. What happened when Chinese Company came with an unsolicited offer? Did any of these question any one or raise in the Parliament. Not only political Leftists, but ordinary leftists attack US for everything, but most of their Children and Kins are in the West, or pro west countries Like Australia, NZ, Japan etc.

  3. do not be joker. did yor ask same question when chinesee top people coming every following week while you were in previous minister?

    • Hi Antany how is your mega case against Rajapaksa Clan progressing in Haig. You getting any closer to a mega conviction or is it all load of hot air as usual. Going by the past rhetoric & mega promises you made I’m sure hot air as it stands now. Government may be in a quagmire but most definitely not flowing your X hero V.P.’s foreign policy for sure.

      • You can’t fool all the people all the time. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is learning new things, this is absolutely necessary for his vibrant political leadership in Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean, South Asia and Asia. He will become more effective and powerful leader in due time. Therefore, do not underestimate him. If Ranil Wickramasinghe can become a leader after a decade, what is stopping MR to become a leader within a decade? I have a proposal for MR and Chinese government. Trust me, I will teach you a lesson in due time.
