Ravi to announce accepted amendments

Ravi KarunananaykeFinance Minister Ravi Karunanayake will announce in Parliament on Saturday the amendments to the 2016 budget accepted by the Government.

Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella told Parliament today that while several amendments and proposals had been made with regards to the 2016 budget, the Finance Minister will announce what has been accepted to be included in the final budget.

Kiriella was responding to a question posed by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath who had asked what the final budget really is.

He noted that while Karunanayake had presented the original budget proposals, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had announced some amendments yesterday and President Maithripala Sirisena is expected to announce more changes on his return from Rome.

Herath said that several trade unions suspended strike action which was to be launched today against the budget following assurances given by the Prime Minister.

However Herath said the trade unions must now keep in mind that only what Karunanayake announces on Saturday will be the final budget and not what the Prime Minister has said with regards to the amendments. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. It is pleasing to note that this Government is listening to People and Trade Unions. No one will know the final form of the Budget proposals until Saturday.

One Major trade Union , the Ceylon Bank Employees Union, representing the elite and most looked after
community among the State Sector employees carried out the Trade Union Action today seeking amendments to Proposals affecting Banking sector.

It is surprising why they kept silent when their Banks systematically created Subsidiaries and transferred profitable Business to subsidiaries. Example of Subsidiaries created by State Banks are Peoples Leasing Ltd, Peoples Merchant Bank Ltd, Ceylease Ltd, Merchant Bank of Ceylon Ltd, These Subsidiaries are in the Business of Leasing, Hire purchasse, etc which the Budget proposals cover. Some of these subsidiaries are now used to give appointments to cronies of the Management of the said Banks, and Trade Union activists of the CBEU. Why this conflict of Interest?
