TNA makes push to release land in North

Mavai SenathirajahThe Tamil National Alliance (TNA) today reiterated a demand to the Government to release civilian land occupied by the military in the North.

Speaking in Parliament today, TNA member Mavai Senathirajah said that while the new Government has freed several acres of land in the North, a lot still remains under military control.

Senathirajah took note of the land being used by the military in Palaly, some of which belongs to civilians who fled the area during the war..

He also said the TNA has no objections to Sinhalese families who are the rightful owners of land in the North from claiming their property.

However he said in some areas the former Government had resettles Sinhalese families illegally on land owned by Tamils.

Meanwhile the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said that several families who have been resettled in the North do not have basic facilities to resume their day to day activities.

JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Ratnayake said that some families are still living in camps, including in tents and need to be given proper homes. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. It will be interesting to know the extent of land occupied
by the Forces in the North, to gauge how severe or not
the land issue is? Such information cannot be treated
as a threat to National Security – a lame excuse these
    days.
