Bandula slams attempt to silence opposition

bandula-gunawardenaJoint opposition member Bandula Gunawardena today accused Parliament of attempting to silence the voice of the opposition.

Speaking during the 2016 budget debate Gunawardena said that the opposition should be given a fair chance to express their views on issues.

Gunawardena had requested for extra time to make a speech on the budget allocation for the Education Ministry but Deputy Speaker Thilanga Sumathipala turned down the request.

The former Education Minister then said that he will take some time from the time allocated for United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage to speak in Parliament today.

However Sumathipala said that Aluthgamage, who was not in Parliament at the time, was on his way and so his time cannot be taken.

Gunawardena then cut short his speech and said that he would make a statement outside Parliament on what he wants to say on issues related to the Education Ministry. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Bandula , Dinesh, raised an issue of availability of CDs and not Hard copies of Departments whose budget allocation were discussed at Committee stage. Hard copies can be read in few minutes, whilst CD,s take more time and going back for reference also very complicated. If any one,s time is to be saved Hard copy is the easiest.

  2. Hi- Mr. Gunawardena, if you wanted to address the house on the Budget 2016 come through the proper channel. Nikam Boru Show Epa? I say Gunawadena, the opposition leader is Mr. Sambandan not your former leaders!! bye – Nihal Gunatilake

    • At this stage when TNA and Sampanthan are backing this government, no one can expect them t o objectively analyse and critique the budget. TNA is not even talking about the rights of Tamils for which purpose they were sent to parliament.
