Lanka raises concerns with Saudi on judgement

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera had an urgent meeting with the Charg? d? Affaires of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Colombo at the Parliament complex, Wednesday, to express the concerns of the Government of Sri Lanka on the reported judgment of the Dawadmi Court of Saudi Arabia which states that a Sri Lankan national should be stoned to death on the charge of adultery.

Ministers Thalatha Atukorale, A.H.M. Fowzie, the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment R. K. Obeyesekere and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were associated with the Foreign Minister at the meeting.

While seeking the indulgence of the Saudi Government, the three Ministers requested for sympathetic consideration in respect of the accused.

During the meeting, Minister Samaraweera requested the Charg? d? Affaires to arrange for him to speak with the Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia at the earliest to seek clemency for the Sri Lankan national concerned. (Colombo Gazette)

Moves to rescue stranded visitors

The Department of wildlife said that an operation had been launched to rescue a group of visitors stranded inside the Minneriya National Park. Around 24 visitors including some foreigners were?stranded?after heavy rain submerged the access routes to where the?visitors?were ?this evening. Wildlife officers and the security forces were involved in trying to reach the visitors to bring them to safety.
