JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament today that while the JVP has been accused of engaging in violence during that period the party has not been accused of such atrocities now.
The 1987–89 insurrection (also known as the 1989 Revolt) saw the JVP engaging in violence to protest against the then Government.
Dissanayake said that the JVP is prepared to debate in Parliament the incidents which took place during that period if the United National Party (UNP) is prepared to discuss the allegations against it which arose during the same period.
The UNP was also accused of engaging in political violence during that period. (Colombo Gazette)
