Dual citizenship granted to 2000 Sri Lankans

03Dual citizenship certificates were granted to 2000 Sri Lankans living overseas, at a function held at Temple Trees today.

President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and several other Ministers and officials attended the function.

  1. The depriving of contesting elections in Sri Lanka for Dual Citizens is a violation of the FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS of a Sri Lankan Citizen. The JVP had only one reason to push that through in the run-up to be made law in the amendment of the 19th constitutional amendment, because they wanted Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Mr. Basil Rajapaksa and Mr. Kumar Gunaratnam – Leader of the Frontline Socialist Party to be kept away from Parliament. Gotabaya and Kumar, if they had contested who have won with very large majorities in the August general elections of 2015. With Kumars entry into parliament, the FSC would have wiped out the popularity of the JVP. But President Maithripala Sirisena, PM Ranil and even the late Rev. Sobitha Thera have done unjust to the vast number of politically aspiring Sri Lankan dual citizens who had political intentions to return back to their home country/Motherland/MAATHRUBOOMIA and engage in National Politics. The 20th., Amendment should revoke this clause, REMOVE it and give the FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT to Sri Lankan Dual Citizens to contest any elections in Sri Lanka if they so wished.
