Andhra Pradesh yet to find owner of Lankan boat

boatOfficials of three vigilance agencies –the Customs, Marine Police and State Police– visited Nagayalanka in Andhra Pradesh, India where an abandoned Sri Lankan boat was found drifting in the Bay of Bengal on Thursday, The Hindu reported today.

The fishing boat with the markings indicating of its Sri Lankan origin was found with no one aboard near the lighthouse at Palakayatippa village. Police said that the semi-damaged boat seemed to have been adrift for long, perhaps for even months. They are investigating now as to how the local fishermen and Marine Police patrols did not notice it until Thursday.

“The boat’s engine is rusty and not in a working condition. There are fishing nets in the hold,” said Shaik Khadar Basha, Avanigadda DSP who is investigating the case.

Meanwhile, police are trying to contact the Sri Lankan Embassy in New Delhi to ascertain the boat’s ownership.
