Speaking at the funeral of the late Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero at the Parliament grounds, the President said that he will abolish the Executive Presidential system and make social changes.
The President, speaking in front of hundreds of people who attended the funeral, said that Sobitha Thero was the architect of the new Government.
He said that apart from abolishing the Executive Presidential system, the late Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero had also called for a new electoral system.
President Maithripala Sirisena said that he and his Government are committed to implement a new electoral system soon.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who also spoke at the funeral, said that the Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero had campaigned for good governance.
The Prime Minister said that the new Government is determined to take forward good governance in the country.
Several diplomats and politicians were among those who attended the funeral of the late Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero.
Members of the clergy, including those from various religions, spoke during the funeral while a statement was also read on behalf of opposition leader R. Sampanthan. (Colombo Gazette)
