Public urged to protect the Government

Lakshman Kiriella (2)The public have been urged to protect the Government and not be misled by what they see taking place in Parliament on television.

Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said that after 20 years the United National Party (UNP) was able to form a Government.

He said that no one believed the UNP, which was in the opposition this time last year, could form the next Government.

Kiriella said now that the opposition has formed a Government, the public must take efforts to protect the Government.

“We can do a lot for the Government only if it is protected,” he said.

The Minister said that the coalition Government was formed to address key National issues including the ethnic conflict.

He said that President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had agreed on the need to find a permanent political solution for the North and East.

Kiriella said that the coalition was able to also prevent international pressure on the country as both main political parties were now working together.

He also said that while members of the Government and the opposition engage in heated arguments in Parliament, when they are outside Parliament the mood is different.

“We have good chats outside Parliament like friends,” he said.

He noted that when the UNP was in the opposition similar scenes were seen in Parliament but it was hardly seen on television since the live broadcast of Parliament proceedings was not approved.

However the new UNP led Government has agreed to the live broadcast of Parliament proceedings and the public have been able to see serious arguments taking place between the Government and the opposition. (Colombo Gazette)
