Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today announced an ambitious economic policy which he says is required to boost Sri Lanka’s economy and make it more stable.
As part of the new policy, the Government will look to invite more foreign investments into the country and also offer more jobs to Sri Lanka’s youth, the Prime Minister told Parliament.
The Government will also establish a development agency and international trade agency to deal with several economic related issues.
The Prime Minister also noted that issued faced by the rubber and tea industry will be addressed by looking at new markets.
He said that a tea industry committee will also be established to look at the issues faced by the tea industry and to develop the industry.
The economic policy of the Government was announced ahead the presentation of the budget for 2016 which will be tabled in Parliament on November 20.
Wickremesinghe said that the new Government wants to establish a strong, stable economy and the environment in the country is suitable for that.
He said that the Government will meet short term goals through some policy changes and in time Sri Lanka will look to be economically on par with other countries.
Wickremesinghe also noted that the economy in Colombo is far developed when compared to the economy in the North and East or parts of the South.
As part of the new development plans for the country, the Government will give a freehold ownership to nearly 3 million people.
He said the Government will also give title deeds to people living on rent in State owned houses for over 10 years.
The Prime Minister also said that new tourist zones will be established in several areas, including at York Street in Fort and in Beruwala to assist the tourism industry.
The Galle Fort will also be developed while protecting its heritage and domestic airports in the country will also be improved.
Wickremesinghe also said that the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport and the Hambantota port will also be made profitable ventures.
A loan system will also be introduced for university students to obtain laptops and more Wifi zones will be setup in the country.
The Prime Minister said that an economic summit will also be held in Sri Lanka to get financial assistance. (Colombo Gazette)
