Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has had a discussion with acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara on the police security seen outside Parliament yesterday.
The Speaker informed Parliament today that he had sought a clarification from the acting IGP based on an issue raised by the opposition yesterday.
Jayasundara has told the Speaker that extra police security had been placed near Parliament following reports that a group of university students may attempt to enter Parliament during a protest staged yesterday.
The acting IGP has also told the Speaker that people visiting Parliament to meet any MP were not blocked by the police.
Meanwhile Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said that the President or the Prime Minister do not give orders to the police as alleged by the opposition as the police is now independent.
Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) leader Dinesh Gunawardena asked the Speaker yesterday if he was responsible for the strong army and police presence seen near Parliament yesterday.
The Speaker had dismissed the claim and said that he does not issue orders to the army or police and added that he will investigate who issued the orders. (Colombo Gazette)
