JVP wants reports in Parliament on clash

01The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today demanded that the reports on the investigations into the police action during a protest by students last week, be submitted to Parliament.

The JVP accused the police of acting like thugs when dealing with the students who staged the protest.

JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the police have an acceptable manner in how they can deal with protests but last week they acted like thugs.

Dissanayake said that the students staged the protest to draw attention to their demands in a peaceful manner but the police acted violently by assaulting the students with batons.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered for a report to be submitted to him on the incident while the National Police Commission has also launched an investigation.

Dissanayake said that the reports on the investigations must be submitted to Parliament and Parliament must discuss the next step in order to ensure similar incidents do not occur in the future. (Colombo Gazette)
