President to work for SLFP win at polls

President Maithripala Sirisena says he will work to ensure the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) wins the next Local Government (LG) elections.

This is despite the SLFP and the UNP working together in the current National unity Government.

Meanwhile Fisheries Minister and SLFP member Mahinda Amaraweera insisted that there is no split in the SLFP.

He says no one in the SLFP has so far spoken of working with another alliance at the LG polls.

There have been reports that some SLFP members will contest under a new alliance formed by the joint opposition at the LG polls. (Colombo Gazette)

Over 27,000 cases filed on traffic offences during special operation

Over 27,000 cases have been filed on traffic offences during a six day special operation conducted around the island, the Police said. The Police said that?1,321 motorists were arrested for driving while under the influence of liquor from 14th to 19th March. The Police also said that over 27,000 cases were filed on motorists for traffic offences committed during this period.
