Government urges Tamil prisoners to stop fast

The Government today urged?Tamil political prisoners who launched a hunger strike to suspend their fast and assured them a solution.

Justice Minister Wijeydasa Rajapaksha visited the inmates at the Welikada prison and made the appeal.

He said that the concerns raised by the prisoners on a fast will be looked into and a solution will be reached by the end of this year.

However Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthirana said that not all the prisoners were willing to agree to the request to suspend the fast.

He said that the prisoners are demanding an assurance directly from President Maithripala Sirisena in order to call-off the fast.

Tamil political prisoners at key prisons around the country began a fast unto death on Monday, demanding their release.

The prisoners are calling for a Presidential pardon and have refused to suspend the fast till they get an acceptable solution. (Colombo Gazette)

Judicature (Amendment) Bill passed in Parliament

The Judicature (Amendment) Bill was passed in Parliament with amendments today. The Bill amends the Judicature Act, No. 2 of 1978 making provisions for a Permanent High Court at Bar to try, hear and determine the trials of the offences specified in the Sixth Schedule of the Act. The new law will enable the chief justice to establish special high courts and appoint three judges to them as needed.

Government assures solution to Iranathivu land issue

The Government today assured that it will provide a solution to the?Iranathivu land issue. The Navy has been occupying?Iranathivu island for security reasons following the war. Families who own land on the island have been protesting for several months demanding that their property be returned. Minister Gayantha Karunatillake told Parliament that the Government is looking into the?Iranathivu land issue and will provide a solution to those affected. (Colombo Gazette)
