Stronger self regulation process in media sought

A group of representatives of the Sri Lanka Press Complaints Commission held a special discussion with President Maithripala today at the Presidential Secretariat.

Attention was paid on the actions to be taken to strengthen the self regulation process of the media, the President’s media division said.

Minister of Parliamentary Reform and Mass Media Gayantha Karunathilaka and the Secretary to the Ministry Vajira Narampanava, Chairman of Wijaya Newspapers Ranjith Wijeywardena, Managing Director of Upali Group of Companies, Nimal Welgama, Dr P Kesavaraj from Asian Media Publishers (Thinakural Group), Editor of the Sunday Times Sinha Ratnatunga, Editor of the Lankadeepa Siri Ranasinghe, Editor of the Sunday Island Mr. Manik de Silva,?Secretary of the Free Media Movement C. Dodawatta, Kanchana Marasinghe of the Working Journalists Association, Kumar Lopez, CEO of the Sri Lanka Press Institute and Sukumar Rockwood from Sri Lanka Press Complaints Commission participated in this discussion. Uva Chief Minister asked to appear before HRCSL on Thursday

Sri Lanka detains 12 Indian fishermen, impounds 3 boats

The Sri Lankan Navy arrested 12 Indian fishermen and confiscated three mechanised fishing boats on the alleged charges of fishing in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Island Nation on Sunday, UNI India reported. Fisheries officials said the incarcerated fishermen hailed from Rameswaram. They were arrested while fishing near the controversial Katchatheevu Island. The fishermen were later remanded to judicial custody till February 8 by Talaimannar court.
