The Government says it wants to take the relationship between Sri Lanka and China to a higher level.
A Foreign Ministry statement said that Special Envoy and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Government of the People’s Republic of China, Liu Zhenmin, during his visit to Sri Lanka, discussed wide-ranging matters.
He called on President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe during his official visit to Sri Lanka.
The Chinese Special Envoy also met with Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and discussed wide-ranging matters of mutual interest including political, economic, development cooperation and people-to-people contacts. Special Envoy Liu Zhenmin conveyed the warm greetings of the Chinese Government to the newly formed unity Government in Sri Lanka and pledged China’s support and cooperation for further strengthening the friendly relations between the two countries.
While appreciating the support extended by China to Sri Lanka both bilaterally and multilaterally, Foreign Minister Samaraweera referred to the friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and China and reiterated the new government’s efforts to bring the relations to a further higher level.
Special Envoy Liu Zhenmin was accompanied by senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and the Ambassador of China to Sri Lanka.
