China told Colombo port city project will resume

134697999_14443996023711nThe new Sri Lankan government has informed China that it will continue the development of suspended Chinese projects, including a multi-billion-dollar mega port city, a Chinese special envoy said on Friday.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin told reporters that during his talks with the Sri Lankan leaders, they had informed him that the Chinese-funded Colombo Port City project would see a re-start at the earliest possible date.

The 1.4-billion-U.S. dollar project, funded by the China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC), was suspended by the government of President Maithripala Sirisena in March for a review of the contract.

Construction of the Colombo Port City began in September 2014 under the previous Mahinda Rajapakse government.

“It has direct foreign investment from China worth 1.4 billion U.S. dollars and this investment can further trigger foreign investment totaling 13 billion U.S. dollars and bring in about 83, 000 job opportunities,” Liu said.

“Sri Lanka should implement the already signed agreements of the Port City project and protect the legitimate rights and interests of the investors. I have received a positive response from the Sri Lankan side and the leaders have made it clear that they will firmly put forward the Colombo Port City project and with joint efforts the project will see a re-start of construction at an early date,” he added.

Liu said the Chinese government hoped the Port City could be completed in three to five years.

The Sri Lankan government has expressed its hope to include the project under its megapolis development plan in order to transform the capital and the country into a technologically advanced and smart nation.

Liu, who is also a special envoy of the Chinese government, said the two sides had agreed to work together in building the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and further coordinate their development strategies so as to achieve a win-win cooperation.

China and Sri Lanka will also make best use of China’s grant assistance to the island nation for the 2014-2016 period announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to the island nation last year.

“The assistance will prioritize medical and health care, education, water conservancy and other programs related to people’ s well being, such as the construction of a kidney hospital,” he said. “This will make the China-Sri Lanka cooperation deliver more benefits to the Sri Lankan people.” (Xinhua)

  1. Every Asian must understand one important thing. Asia can’t be peaceful and prosperous without China. Therefore, India, Japan and rest of Asia can’t remove China from the equation to replace the West. Nevertheless the West will continue to imply that Asia is better off without China. The West’s job is dividing others to keep themselves on the top. I am well aware how the West uses Tamils to isolate me, including my family members, relatives and friends. This country has a track record of fighting the longest civil war in Asia, therefore I don’t worry too much if they collaborate with my enemies. Asia has a long way to go, therefore every Asian intellectual’s job to guide the leaders, including the Chinese Communist Party leaders. If China failed as Japan had failed in the 1930s and 1940s, not only China failed, but Asia failed.

    • Antany wow you change your tune haven’t you in the past you had very unkind thing to say about China now just as fence hoping turncoat do you trying to get on the good side of China. Whole of the West have nothing to do other than trying to conspire great intellectual Antany . But backup a moment aren’t you living in New Zealand. Hello a Western country. Hate all thing Sinhalese & Western cant expect any thing more from a LTTE sympathizer still seething with anger of demise of LTTE.

      • I always guide the Asian leaders, including Chinese Communist Party. I totally disagree how China handled the Rajapaksa government. I have been living in Asia since May 2014. You don’t have facts. You talk without facts, like a dog barks at the sun. Why don’t you publish your full name, instead of publishing comments under bogus names. Your comments are published in Sri Lankan media, bucause there is no professionalism. Colombo Gazette knows where I live, yet it has published your comment. This country has been fighting the longest civil war in Asia. What does it tell you? This country has the least smartest leaders in politics, media, education, transport, health etc.

        • Come of it Antany you live in Wellington New Zealand. And by the way remember you rang to abuse me. I gave you ample opportunity to meet me in Wellington. You never took the offer did you now? You have been outed by few other Sri Lankans. Lets see your ranting been in Mowbima,Lanka Truth, CT, CG, Daily Mirror, Now defunct your own Asia Unite web site and plethora of other sites. Challenge for you I’ll be in Wellington 30th this month. You name the place & time ill show up but now don’t be violent because you promised to smash my face when you see me via Lanka Truth many times but I will take the chance. You know my number still the same. You can use many aliases as you like but what gives you away is your hatred towards all Sinhalese. Funny that you never write to New Zealand news papers about your extreme views about the West ha!

          • Keep barking at intellectuals as a dog barks at the mighty sun. Keep fool others as you always do. Eventually, you will come to know that you have fooled yourself. If I don’t have the ability to deal with your madness I would not have exposed the West. I took on the West, because I have the ability. Mad fools like you only have the ability to bark at smart Asians. Asia would have been better off, if people like you never born.
