Water Supply and Drainage Minister Rauff Hakeem today assured the public in Colombo that the water distributed to their homes was safe.
He said that tests conducted so far on the Kelani river water had found that the recent contamination of the water had been caused by furnace oil.
The Minister said that more tests will be carried out and legal action will be taken against the soft drinks company accused of contaminating the water.
Hakeem said that advice has been sought from the Attorney General’s Department to take legal action against the Coca Cola company.
He also said that further tests are being carried out on the environmental impact caused by the contamination while the police are also conducting investigations. (Colombo Gazette)
