An uproar took place in Parliament today over the political parties recognized in Parliament.
The uproar took place when Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said that Parliament recognizes only six political parties.
He said that political parties within another party cannot be given recognition since they have been elected to parliament not as an individual party but as part of a coalition.
As a result, Lakshman Kiriella said that even Speaker Karu Jayasuriya must have discussions with leaders of the political parties or coalition elected to Parliament.
National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa disputed the statement and said that in the past even leaders of political parties in a coalition were recognized, especially if they split from the coalition and sat separately in Parliament.
Mahajana Eksath Peramuna leader Dinesh Gunawardena said that if the voice of the real opposition in Parliament is silenced then that would lead to human rights related issues. (Colombo Gazette)
