Couple arrested with Rs 5 million worth heroin

The customs department arrested a?couple at the Bandaranaike International Airport today with 5 kilos of heroin.

A 45 year old male and a 60 year old woman, both residents of Colombo, were arrested by the staff of the customs narcotic control unit.

They had in their possession five packets of heroin weighing approximately 5 kilos?valued at Rs. 5 million

The heroin had been concealed inside packets containing spices. The couple had arrived from Chennai.

Investigations are being carried out by the Superintendent of Customs D.M.G.Nimalthilake and Assistant Superintendent of Customs Gayan Senaratna. (Colombo Gazette)

Another top US State Department official to visit Sri Lanka

Another top US State Department official is to visit Sri Lanka for talks. Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Charles H. Rivkin will travel on August 8-12 to Burma and Sri Lanka, the State Department said. Assistant Secretary Rivkin will be in Colombo on August 11-12 to meet with government and business leaders to discuss opportunities for increasing two-way trade and investment. SLFP decides to take disciplinary action on party members

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party Central Committee has decided to take disciplinary action on several party members. The decision was taken when the SLFP?Central Committee met late this evening with President Maithripala Sirisena. As part of the move the SLFP has decided to suspend the party membership of Parliamentarian Sanath Nishantha. The SLFP has also decided to hold an inquiry on a group of SLFP members who tore party interview papers at a media briefing this week. (Colombo Gazette)
