President Maithripala Sirisena is to push for capital punishment to be implemented from next year and he will seek Parliament approval for this.
The President had said this while speaking at a function in Galle today. There has been a public call for capital punishment following the recent rape and murder incidents in the country.
President Sirisena said that he had received several requests to bring back capital punishment and so he will seek Parliament approval for it.
He said that international human rights groups often raise concerns when a country implements the death penalty.
“However major countries like China and America have the death penalty. I have nothing against the death penalty,” the President asserted.
The President said that he can easily implement the death penalty since all that is required is his signature but he would prefer to seek the views of Parliament first. (Colombo Gazette)
