President to push for capital punishment

Maithripala SirisenaPresident Maithripala Sirisena is to push for capital punishment to be implemented from next year and he will seek Parliament approval for this.

The President had said this while speaking at a function in Galle today. There has been a public call for capital punishment following the recent rape and murder incidents in the country.

President Sirisena said that he had received several requests to bring back capital punishment and so he will seek Parliament approval for it.

He said that international human rights groups often raise concerns when a country implements the death penalty.

“However major countries like China and America have the death penalty. I have nothing against the death penalty,” the President asserted.

The President said that he can easily implement the death penalty since all that is required is his signature but he would prefer to seek the views of Parliament first. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. This is an emotional request from the general public after every incident happened something like Seya murder in our country. But Hon. President must not take a decision based on emotional requests. There are things to consider and things to study. The capital punishment is not go alone with your Maithree or Meththa concept and 2015 January revolution. Other thing is it is not acceptable to Buddhist country. Third is majority of the world community not seeing it as appropriate action to implement in present day world. (It may be go with the some countries) but it is uncivilised act of state. Fourth is studies have shown that socio cultural impact to reduce the crime is negative with compare to non capital punishment .

  2. Like 19th Amendment was passed in the Parliament,His Excellency the President could implement this too in the interest of our younger generation.
