Lankan Tamil in special camp attempts suicide

jailA Sri Lankan Tamil housed in the special camp on Tiruchi, India allegedly attempted to end his life by consuming sleeping pills on Sunday night demanding his release from the camp.

The Sri Lankan Tamil, Yugapriyan, against whom a case booked by the Kanniyakumari Q Branch unit was pending, was admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital for treatment, The Hindu newspaper reported.

A human trafficking case has been registered against him. He has been lodged in the camp as the case was pending, the police said. His health condition was stable, the police said. Meanwhile, five other Sri Lankan Tamils housed in the same camp who were on a fast since Friday demanding their release withdrew it on Sunday.

A case under Explosive Substances Act booked by the Chennai City Q Branch unit is pending against them. The five wanted their release from the camp saying that they would attend the court hearing staying outside.
