Policy decision taken on Indo – Sri Lanka bridge

The Indian Government?has taken a policy decision on?building a bridge linking Talaimannar in Sri Lanka with Danushkodi, Indian Union Minister Kalraj Mishra said.

“We have decided to build a bridge that would help develop both the countries in various fronts..It is a policy stand and we will implement it,” the Union Minister for Micro medium and Small Enterprises said, according to the Press Trust of India.

In July the Union minister of state for road transport, highways and shipping, Pon Radhakrishna had said that the Indian central government is considering a proposal to establish a rail bridge linking Rameswaram in the Tamil Nadu state and Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka’s northwest.

The Union Minister has told reporters during an informal chat that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government is considering a proposal to establish a bridge to connect the two countries.

A short boat ride used to connect the railway lines that ended at Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka and Dhanushkodi in India, which was in operation till 1966. The distance between Dhanushkodi in Rameswaram and the Sri Lankan boundary is about 23 kilometers. (Colombo Gazette)
