The Government has decided to set free 16 Indian fishermen as a goodwill gesture to mark Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s visit to India tomorrow.
The Indians had been arrested while poaching in Sri Lankan waters and were remanded.
Fisherman’s associations in Tamil Nadu had later urged the Sri Lankan Government to release the 16 fishermen.
The Prime Minister’s office said that it was decided to release the fishermen in order to ensure the strong friendship between India and Sri Lanka is maintained.
Wickremesinghe’s office said that the Government also took note of the request made by the Indian fisherman’s associations.
Indian fishermen continue to poach in Sri Lankan waters and talks aimed at resolving the issue have so far failed to reach a breakthrough. (Colombo Gazette)
