Prime Minister and United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says he is determined to meet the target of making Sri Lanka a new country in 60 months.
Speaking at the 69th anniversary meeting of the United National Party (UNP) at the UNP headquarters in Sirikotha today, Wickremesinghe also said that UNP supporters should not have doubts on the National Government.
He said that some UNP supporters are concerned over the Ministerial portfolios given to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) in the National Government but he assured that all UNP supporters will be looked after considering the support they gave him and the President.
Wickremesinghe also noted that the feeling that family rule cannot be defeated was proved wrong as a result of the sacrifices made by the UNP.
UNP Assistant Leader Ravi Karunanayake, who also spoke at the event, said that it was the first time that a President who is a Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) member was attending a UNP anniversary as the chief guest.
He said that with the UNP and the SLFP working together in the National Government the expectations of a majority of the people will be met.
UNP General Secretary Kabir Hashim said that the UNP was never shaken during defeat and remained strong when it lost elections.
He said the commitment and sacrifices made by Wickremesinghe allowed the UNP to win the recent elections.
Hashim also noted that the UNP could have formed a minority Government on its own but it decided to form a National Government.
He said that the UNP leader wanted to change the country and not just have a UNP Government in place and that is why he decided to form a National Government with the SLFP.
