Sampanthan faces resistance for opposition post

sampanthanSome members of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) today raised concerns over attempts to make Tamil National Alliance (TNA) the main opposition in Parliament.

Fourteen UPFA members including former President Mahinda Rajapakse now sit in the opposition benches opposing the National Government while the TNA has 16 seats.

The TNA this week claimed that R. Sampanthan must be recognized as the leader of the opposition in accordance with parliamentary practice and convention as they have now emerged as the largest political party in the opposition in Parliament, after the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and United National Party (UNP) decided to work together in the new parliament.

However UPFA member, Udaya Gammanpila said that despite the TNA now having more seats than any other opposition party, they worked against the country, especially by calling for an international domestic probe into war crimes.

“The TNA has a separatist agenda and they have been calling for an international war crimes probe which all parties are against. And they are a regional party, only representing the north and east of the country. So despite having more seats, it cannot be the main opposition,” Gammanpila said.

He further said that the UPFA members who had decided to sit as opposition parliamentarians had already submitted a name from its party for the opposition leader’s post to President Maithripala Sirisena and expected an answer from the President soon. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Mr.Gammanpila, not only the TNA but also the tamils living all over the world want an internatinal investigation about the genocide carriedout by the sinhala chauvinists and the buddhists extremists. If there is no international investigation, there will be a permanent division between the two communities.

  2. Uthaya Mahthaya,
you don’t make arbitory rules on How to elect opposition leader. this is not your previous GOVT
run by people being investigated for corruptions
by making their own rules as they pleased .

  3. Come off it Gamanpila. Why are you against an investigation in to “war crimes”. These are crimes against humanity, and that includes you as well. Many an argument is sound – just sound.
Domestic investigation is as good as having no investigation.
Remember “A fox should not be of the jury at a goose’s trial”.

  4. If RW and MS want to work together to foster national unity the only way they can show that they are genuine is by appointing Mr.Sampandan as the opposition leader.

  5. Come off it Gamanpila. How can you say no to a probe on “war crimes”? These are crimes suppose to have been committed against humanity, which includes you too; I presume you are human.
When some people are afraid of an issue, they say there isn’t one. Many an argument is sound- just sound.

  6. Whatever party which commands the highest number of seats, who sits in the opposition should be considered as the opposition leader.

    • That’s correct. UPFA/SLFP cannot have it both ways. If they want to stake claim for L of O come to opposition and definitely TNA won’t stake a claim. Sambandan being a Tamil does not disqualify him. He is a Sri Lankan. May MP for Kurunagala Hon’ble MR propose Sambandan as L of O and put an end to the damage his campaign has done to chase away minority vote base of SLFP. ( I do not put the blame on him and it is the gang of four that manipulated otherwise they would not have become MP’s)
