The Illangai Thamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) today demanded the post of opposition leader to be given to ITAK leader R. Sampanthan.
ITAK noted that since the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party have decided to form a National Government the post of opposition leader should be given to ITAK.
A statement by ITAK said that the UNP won the recent Parliamentary election and secured the most number of seats in Parliament while the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) came second and ITAK third.
Since the UNP and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the main alliance member of the UPFA have decided to form a National Government, ITAK says Sampanthan should be made opposition leader since ITAK has the most number of seats in Parliament after the UNP and UPFA. (Colombo Gazette)
