A consensus has been reached on the portfolios to be given to the members of the National Government and the new cabinet will take oaths on September 2, United National Party (UNP) Chairman Malik Samarawickrema said today.
Samarawickrema said that the UNP has maintained that it wants to create a new political culture and make the entire Parliament the Government.
As part of this move the UNP was keen to create a National Government for at least two years, the UNP chairman said.
He said that following several rounds of talks with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) an agreement has been reached on the Ministerial portfolios.
Samarawickrema said that the UNP and SLFP will need to make several sacrifices when forming the new Government but both sides have agreed to do so and will now work towards a new country in 60 months. (Colombo Gazette)
