A Bodu Jana Peramuna (BJP) monk has been arrested over an election related meeting held at the Dharga Town ahead of the last Presidential election.
Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary and BJP Parliamentary candidate, the venerable Galagoda aththe Gnanasara said that Magalkande Sudantha Thero had been arrested for allegedly disregarding a police order at the time.
Magalkande Sudantha Thero was a BJP candidate at the Parliamentary election and he had held a public meeting at a Temple in the area despite being told by the police not to do so.
Galagoda aththe Gnanasara said that the police had wanted Magalkande Sudantha Thero to avoid holding the election meeting following some concerns raised by the public.
However the monk had disregarded the police orders and staged the meeting and as a result he was arrested today.
Galagoda aththe Gnanasara said that the police could have arrested him earlier if they wanted to and arresting him now showed that they were merely taking revenge.
Magalkande Sudantha Thero was produced before a Magistrate and released on bail. (Colombo Gazette)
