Police nab over 480 people ahead of polls

The police have arrested over 480 people in election related incidents since the day Parliament was dissolved and elections were declared.

Police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that the police had conducted 214 raids at several locations from the day elections were called for till yesterday.

He said that during that period the police had arrested 484 people and legal action was filed against them.

The police spokesman said that, separately, the police had received 275 complaints related to the August 17 Parliament elections.

He said that investigations have been launched over those complaints by the respective police stations. (Colombo Gazette)

The death toll from the floods and landslides rose to 224 this evening with 78 others still missing. The Disaster Management Centre said that over 600,000 people have been affected and over 25,000 people are in temporary shelters or camps.

Police to get tough on spreading racism via social media

The Police today warned that tough action will be taken against anyone who spreads racism via social media. The Police said that IGP Pujith Jayasundara has issued instructions to all Police divisions to enforce the law against spreading racism. All Police divisions have been told to take stern action on?anyone spreading hate via social media. The move comes after the international community raised concerns over several incidents of hate crimes in the recent past, especially targeting Muslims.
