Underworld members are involved in election related work in four districts, local election monitors said today.
The Campaign for a Free and Fair Election (CaFFE) said that they have received information related to underworld members involved in election campaign work in Colombo, Gampaha, Hambantota and Kandy.
CaFFE Executive Director, Keerthi Tenakoon, said that underworld members who were known to have been close with the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) have now shifted their support to the Government and are engaged in election campaigning in Colombo.
He also said that in the Gampaha District, several underworld members are working with the Government and even providing security for their election campaigning.
Tenakoon said that in the Hambantota and Kandy Districts, owners of private security agencies are also contesting the August 17 Parliamentary election.
He said that army deserters have been employed by some of these agencies and there is a fear that members of these agencies may clash when election day gets closer. (Colombo Gazette)
