There has been an increase in the number of people arrested during the past six months over the use of illegal drugs when compared to the same period last year, Chairman of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board Dr. Nilanga Samarasinghe said.
He said that a 25 percent increase has been noted over the past six months when compared to last year while the number of arrests over the use of heroin has seen an eight fold increase.
Samarasinghe said that the public are now giving the authorities information over individuals using or promoting illegal drugs as a result of the awareness created in recent times.
He said that awareness programs have also been launched to ensure school children are kept safe from drugs and heroin dealers.
Meanwhile Samarasinghe said that he has urged the Government to give him security as there are threats to his life owing to the work he does, but so far he has not been given such security. (Colombo Gazette)
