The Sri Lankan navy has been accused of attacking Indian fishermen while they were fishing in Sri Lankan waters yesterday.
A complaint filed with the Indian police stated that navy personnel had yesterday allegedly assaulted three Indian fishermen and snatched their mobile phones while they were fishing in Lankan waters.
Quoting one of a fisherman identified as Jenold, police said that the men were fishing in Lankan waters when the naval personnel asked them to leave, the Press Trust of India reported.
The naval personnel jumped into their boats, allegedly attacked them and snatched their mobile phones even as the fishermen were getting ready to leave, police said.
More than 500 boats from Rameswaram were in the sea for fishing when the incident took place. The other fishermen left the scene immediately, police said.
The injured fishermen were treated by doctors, they added. (Colombo Gazette)
