Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been appointed as the chairman of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) election operations committee for the polls next month.
The appointment was made when the party leaders of the UPFA met today at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) headquarters.
Rajapaksa, who also attended the meeting and was seen seated at the head table, is contesting the August 17 Parliament elections from the Kurunegala District.
UPFA member, Vasudeva Nanayakkara said that at the special UPFA leader’s meeting the party had unanimously elected Rajapakse to lead the UPFA’s election operations committee.
“We are confident of victory and all the UPFA leader’s accepted that Mahinda Rajapakse should be made the leader of the election’s operations committee. President Sirisena’s remarks will least affect our campaigning or affect our victory at the elections,” Nanayakkara said. (Colombo Gazette)
