Ranil expects Maithri to stay away from election

MaithripalaPrime Minister and United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe expects President Maithripala Sirisena to stay away from the August 17 election campaign.

The Hindu newspaper reported that the President and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) chairperson Maithripala Sirisena, who has received flak recently from certain sections for reportedly clearing the nomination of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa for the parliamentary elections, is going to stay away from the polls.

Indicating this in a chat with The Hindu at his office, Wickremesinghe, in his reply to a question whether he felt sad about Sirisena giving nomination to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, said the position of President Sirisena must be looked against the backdrop that “though he [Sirisena] is the President, he does not control the party fully. So, he is influencing events from his position. Anyway, he is not going to take part in the elections.” (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Ranil – That goes without saying as any party engaging
him on the stages will feel its an disadvantage as he
somersaulted and people does not want to hear from him.

  2. Ranil, please realize that Sirisena is not going to listen to you now. You will have to now try to win on your own without hiding behind others like earlier.
