The Government is investigating the email statements reportedly issued by Sri Lanka’s former Ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga.
Deputy Foreign Minister Ajith Perera said that suspicions had arisen after it was found that the emails were being sent from an email linked to a local politician.
The emails, in the form of media statements, had been published in some local media but Perera said that there were doubts over the authenticity of the emails.
In one such statement, Udayanga Weeratunga had denied the allegations against him and claimed he was in Ukraine.
Weeratunga, who has been accused by the Government of giving arms to rebels in Ukraine, had said that the allegations are false and that he is not under any investigation in Ukraine.
Weeratunga has been accused of supplying arms to Ukrainian rebels while he was the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia. (Colombo Gazette)
