Rail bridge to link Rameswaram and Mannar

pon-radhakrishna_3_0A proposal is being considered to establish a rail bridge linking Rameswaram (a coastal pilgrim centre in Tamil Nadu) and Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka.

Indian union minister of state for road transport, highways and shipping, Pon Radhakrishnan revealed that the Centre is considering the proposal to establish the rail bridge, the Deccan Chronicle reported

A short boat ride used to connect the railway lines that ended at Talaimannar in Sri Lanka (Talaimannar) and Dhanushkodi in India, which was in operation till 1966. During his visit to the city on Sunday, the Union Minister told reporters during an informal chat that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government is considering a proposal to establish a bridge to connect the two countries.

Asked about the fate of the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project, Mr Radhakrishnan said the project was not shelved. “The matter is sub judice… a decision on the project would be taken based on the outcome of the court ruling,” he said.

On the Tamil Nadu state government expressing concern over the security to the century-old Mullaiperiyar dam, citing an intelligence bureau report in its petition to the Supreme Court about the imminent threat from terrorists, Mr Radhakrishnan said, the dam deserved to be protected at all cost.

The threat may come from anywhere. One should not aim to seek political mileage on this issue. And at the same time it should not be forgotten that LTTE was responsible for the assassination of ex-Prime Minister in Tamil Nadu,” he said.

When his reaction was sought on the BJP state president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan’s charge that the state government was not working closely with the Centre, he said without elaborating that the state could benefit a lot from the numerous schemes of the Centre. Dr Tamilisai had also alleged that TN went without any representation at a meeting to finalise the smart cities project, though Mr Modi gave 12 projects to the state.

  1. The Hon.Minister is free to do whatever he wants as long as they are within the Indian Boundaries, I am alone in saying that it is best to keep things as they have always been for thousands of years. It is the wish of the Gods to keep the countries apart and the mythically famed Adams bridge was sunk by the Gods
so that the lands will separated by the body of water.
Besides, India is not a friendly neighbour to live with and this is evident with India interfering in the internal affairs of their neghbours and it did not stop India from interfering in Sri Lanka as well in spite of the Palk strait
separating these two countries. It is left to the imagination of anyone how it would be if Sri Lanka was attached to India even with a string ???

  2. This proposed project of railway bridge is that annex by India will be occupied land of Sri lanka.

The majority Sri Lankan an opposed that so-called proposal by Indian hegemony of colonized our land.
We do not want such connection bridge between
Sri lanka and India this 21st century.

Our nation will loose our sovereignty and independence, if by mishap proposed project come into being.

    • Do you realise the Chinese are slowly swallowing Sri Lanka like a snake consuming a prey without it even knowing? Get real man. Your people killed our PM but we never hold hostility towards SL as unlike with the Chinese our national relationships are thousands of years old. The Chinese always exploit relationships between two nations for strategic and monetary considerations. Wake up my friend.

  3. It is a very good move because then South India can off-load all its unemployed into Jaffna with the accompanying drugs and other problems. Thanks India and Modi
