Ranil recalls CBK chose party before nation

ranil_chandrikaPrime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today recalled that in 2003 when he was Prime Minister and Chandrika Kumaratunga was President, she chose her party before the country.

Wickremesinghe, who at the time was involved in peace talks with the LTTE following the signing of a cease fire agreement, said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) which was led by Kumaratunga at the time, did not understand what the then UNP Government was attempting to do by negotiating with the LTTE.

The Prime Minister was speaking at a function held at the BMICH today to mark former President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s birthday.

Wickremesinghe said that in 2002-2003 he felt he could work with Kumaratunga on the National issue despite both of them being from two separate political parties. However that attempt failed.

“She had different reasons for the failure for us to work together back then and I have different reasons,” he said.

Wickremesinghe said that some members of the SLFP had, during that period, looked at short term gains and not the bigger picture and that some of them are still in the SLFP.

Kumaratunga, in 2004 dissolved Parliament and called for Parliament elections, which later saw the UNP lose power and the ceasefire agreement with the LTTE being cancelled.

The Prime Minister said that had the UNP been able to continue in power back then, the situation after that would have been different and lives lost following the resumption of war could have been saved.

Wickremesinghe said that despite the issues in the past, in 2013 the UNP agreed to work with Kumaratunga as they looked to remove the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government.

He said that after several rounds of talks with other political parties and civil society, everyone agreed last year to nominate Maithripala Sirisena as the Presidential candidate for the January elections this year. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Ranil placed the first step to break L TT, by Karuna out.
A group failed in front of this approach.

    • uneducated mahinda type idiots will understand RW politics. It Ranil who broke the LTTE. it was not done so, no one would even touched the LTTE. Even Mahind’s manifesto, he mentioned that he will go for war. it said that mahinda will continue with the peace talk.

  2. CBK was eternally drunk while Ranil attempted to sell a part of the country on a master plan drawn by Bondevik the then Norwegian PM through his Chief Diplomat in SL. Solheim was a just a poster boy sent to man the Red Barna when the Norwegian strategy to eliminate muslims from N&E though the LTTE.
Solheim was a understudy of the drunken strategists B’singhan. he learnt the ABCs from him to favour the divisin of the Country.
Fortunately someone was alert from within the CBK camp.
MR stood upto the powerful Western FMs who came to bailout the LTTE Leadership.
He gave the Leadership to the forces to annhilate the LTTE and to recover lost land and unite the country to what it is today.
Ranil & CBK had other agendas and neither the Party or the Country.
Still remember the insults hurled at the liberating forced by UNP. The Alimankada/Thoppigala, Madawachchiya/Killinochchiya, Thoppigala, Salvation Army comments ect., and these very shameful Leaders are attempting to resurrect the country having led astray that Sirisena.

Ranil & CBK are just talkers only disengaged from the ordinary masses.

  3. Question for Ranil “Mr Wickramasinghe can you choose the country before your self interest” .

  4. Thank god (and CBK) for CBK choosing the Party before the Country. Otherwise, RW would have given away the North and the East to the LTTE.

  5. In 2003 RW didnt try to protect the govt. Now also I dont see much effort to win the hearts and minds of the people. I am sad to say that it is not UNP who topple MR regime. It was done by the progressive youths. Now try to address their concerns without any delay. Dont trust anyone otherthan youth and the general masses. UNP has a huge strength.use it for the benefit of the country.

    • 56% of Sinhalese voted Mahinda. 89% tamils and 83% Muslims voted Sirisena. I think now 65% of sinhalese will vote Mahinda.
