The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is to have a key meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena this afternoon.
SLFP sources told the Colombo Gazette that opposition leader Nimal Siripala de Silva, SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadharshana Yapa and UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayanth will take part in the discussions.
Sources said that at the meeting a decision is likely to be taken with regards to giving nominations to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest the August 17 Parliament elections.
Sirisena had already announced that nominations will be given to the former President but there is pressure on him to reverse that decision.
Well informed sources said that the SLFP and the UPFA will urge the President to give Rajapaksa nominations as promised as failure to do so could result in a split in the UPFA. (Colombo Gazette)
