United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says he was given a mandate by the people to be the Prime Minister for 100 days.
Wickremesinghe said that by defeating former President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the last Presidential election, the public has also shown their opposition to Rajapaksa’s Government.
“President Maithripala Sirisena had the option of dissolving Parliament after taking office but instead he had sought a mandate from the public during his election campaign to appoint me as the Prime Minister and have a 100 day Government. I was appointed based on that mandate,” the Prime Minister said at an event in Galgamuwa today.
Wickremesinghe said that if the people do not want him then they can vote him out at the next Parliament election.
However he said that if the UNP is given a majority at the next election then the UNP will form a National Government once again consisting of all the political parties represented in Parliament.
“If we do not get a mandate at the next election we will go and sit in the opposition,” he said.
The Prime Minister said that he is ready to face an election and urged the opposition to push for Parliament elections to be held soon.
Wickremesinghe however said that the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has no right to seek a mandate when they have already been rejected by the people. (Colombo Gazette)
