Sri Lanka’s former Ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga, is attempting to clear his baggage which is still at the Colombo Port.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mahishini Colonne said that Weeratunga had visited the Sri Lankan Embassy in Iran last month and sought clearance of his baggage.
However the Embassy had instructed him to return his diplomatic passport as he is no longer a diplomat.
Weeratunga has however refused to do so. Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry said that Weeratunga’s diplomatic passport has been cancelled.
Weeratunga has been accused of supplying arms to Ukrainian rebels while he was the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia.
Colonne said that Sri Lanka is ready to send a team to Ukraine to assist in the investigations over the alleged arms deal.
She said that the Government is however still awaiting a response from Ukraine on the assistance it would require with regards to the investigation. (Colombo Gazette)
