Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya says the Department of Elections prefers to hold the Parliament elections on a Saturday.
Deshapriya said that the department is giving serious consideration to the idea and will discuss it with the relevant Government officials.
He said that holding an election on a Saturday will go a long way to assist Government and private sector employees who need to take leave to travel to their hometowns to place their votes.
Deshapriya also said that the current Parliament has time till April next year for its term to end so it can continue till April unless the President dissolves Parliament before that.
The Elections Commissioner also said that he has so far not been informed of an early election but added that his department is ready to conduct the polls at any given time. (Colombo Gazette)
