Court bans protests in Jaffna

Jaffna protestThe Jaffna Magistrate has issued a stay order banning all types of protests in the Jaffna town, the police media unit said.

The stay order was issued as a result of the violence which erupted in Jaffna this week during a protest against the alleged rape and murder of a girl in Jaffna.

The police had to use tear gas to disperse the protesters who had damaged public property and had also pelted stones at the Jaffna court building.

Police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that the ban on protests was issued after information was received that some groups were going to stage protests demanding the release of 130 people arrested over the Jaffna violence.

The police had arrested 130 people following the violence and they were later remanded after being produced in court.

Gunasekera said that anyone violating the court ban on protests in Jaffna will be arrested.

At least three groups were preparing to stage protests in Jaffna to demand the release of the 130 people. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Sudden emergence of violent protest in NE should not be taken lightly as some interested parties using the very unfortunate incident as a testing ground…

  2. The government should only allow one particular place in a district for the people to express their views. As Hong Lim Park in Singapore. People can’t move around everywhere injuring police forces and damage properties in Singapore. Sri Lanka should implement useful democracy as Singapore instead of following useless democracy.

  3. Diaspora Boy Anthony, Ranil-Chandrika-Mangala follows Swiss type democracy not Singapore type democracy. Anything Asian looks inferior to them, thats why they feel inferior and little about themselves. But let me tell you this: When you give up your indigenous values and religions, you become nobody and Sudda treats you even worse. Thats whats happening to Latin Americans, although they are Catholic by conversions (sometimes forcefully), Sudda treats has made this whole region (in the backyard of worlds only superpower) a bunch of losers. Anyway, DONT DOUBT ME ON THIS: YOU CAN NEVER BE A SUDDA by giving up your own. There is enough values in Sinhala and Tamil indigenous value systems, that people can live together even in a society not necessarily democratic (i know this is harder in an open economic system); we only need a handful of leaders who dont feel small inside them.

    • I have been here four weeks and assessed your mindsets. You have no chance to become like Singapore in the next 15-25 years. Meantime Singapore leaders and ASEAN will establish themselves and make sure Singapore and other South East Asian countries get most of the businesses and lead Asia. Indian Subcontinent will never beat the Chinese, Japanese, South East Asia and the West; because your hearts and minds are darker than your skin colour. Sorry for being honest 😉

    • Why do I say Sri Lanka will never become like Singapore? Because this country does not appreciate smart people. I try to get a job and help the country, but I couldn’t get a job. You just can’t appreciate or handle smart people. You are only good in daydreaming to become like Singapore while meditating your dangerous ideology.
