UN silent on appointment of Jagath Dias

Farhan HaqThe United Nations (UN) refused to comment on the appointment of Major General Jagath C Dias as the new Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army.

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was asked at a press conference if the UN had any comments on the post given to Jagath Dias despite some human rights allegations against him and since he may get listed in a UN Human Rights Council report on Sri Lanka.

“I think first we’ll allow for the Human Rights Council itself to review the matter and pronounce themselves on that,” Farhan Haq said in response to the question.

On Sunday Human Rights Watch said Sri Lanka’s promotion of Jagath Dias, whose division was implicated in serious human rights abuses, casts doubt on government pledges to credibly investigate alleged war crimes.

Maj. Gen. Jagath Dias, who led the Army’s 57th Division during the last two years of the civil war with the LTTE, was appointed army chief of staff, one of the armed forces’ highest post. Although effective May 7, 2015, the appointment was only made public on May 15.

“Sri Lanka’s new government has promised genuine accountability for wartime abuses, but naming the general of an abusive unit the army chief of staff is a slap in the face for victims,” said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “Members of the UN Human Rights Council expecting genuine accountability in Sri Lanka need to closely scrutinize the government’s actions.” (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Brad, do you really think we are going to put are war hero’s in jail, the people who defeated terrorists and brought peace to our motherland, you must be dreaming. no government will ever do that.
We know how to deal with the toothless UNHCR and US and John Kerry is no longer interested in this subject. They just want to beat the Chinese here.

    • War hero?

      War criminal, I would say.

Why did he run away from Europe if he was innocent? He should have fought the Allegation but he chose to run away like a guilty coward!

      • YES A WAR HERO!
May be for you, a hero means some one who place a bomb in a public bus and blast it while hiding away like your hero Prabhakaran. But for others, it is different.

      • For millions of people he is a war hero! Do you think coward Prabhakaran war hero? He killed so many innocent people while he tried surrender to army like a dog with his tail wagging!

    • When more than 50% of US economy is under the Chinese there is no beating them other than beating around the bush and picking on developing 3rd. World countries like the school yard bully.

  2. Major General Jagath Dias is a infantry soldier had all sort of officer qualities to be with his soldiers throughout the war not only the final stages of war but entire his 35 years of military career. Chief of Staff is an appointment in the Army not a RANK as such his seniority and the bravery during his career itself automatically qualifies him to this possition he should be the next Army commander with out any dispute. Our country our forces is our business none of of the business og other countries or organizations .

  3. What right US has to advise SL on appointing whoever they want in country’s positions? SL is a sovereign country, just like the US

  5. jagath dias has been accused of war crimes . how could the government appoint this guy as chief of staff.i would never know. on the one hand sirisena is talking about reconciliation but what he does is just the opposite. he is still talking about outdated and unworkable so called unitary status. tamil people want maximum devolution of power. how could that be possible under unitary set up. why are these sinhala lot talking about unitary status all the time. unitary status benefited no one. it has been a total disaster. under unitary status there have been race riots, civil wars .etc.etc. unitary status is no longer viable.if sirisena carries on with this unitary status, i have no doubt there will be civil wars in the near future.

  6. Anyone appointed under Yahapalana has a connection with it behind the door. So it is obvious why UN is silent on this.
