President Mahinda Rajapaksa has warned of attempts to create an uprising and destabilise the country by creating discord between communities on racial and religious grounds.
He recalled that in the Middle East governments were overthrown by sending out SMS messages, staging street protests, instigating the youth and creating clashes among Muslims.
Speaking at an election rally in Matale today, the President said that those claims and allegations in Middle East were merely created to overthrow governments.
He said that however there are still problems in Iraq, Libya and Egypt even after regime changes were forced in those countries.
The President warned that similar attempts are now being made in Sri Lanka by raising false allegations and creating rifts between the people.
“The people should be mindful of this and be cautious,” he said.
The President urged the Muslim and Tamil community not to be misled by false propaganda and instead support the reconciliation efforts of the country. (Colombo Gazette)
