Indian authorities arrested five Sri Lankan fishermen when they were found fishing within the Indian Marine boundary, the Express News service reported today.
Police said the fishermen were intercepted at about 150 nautical miles from the Chennai coast by a patrolling team of the Coastal Security Group.
The arrested persons were handed over to the Harbour police and the fishermen were booked for violation of India’s marine boundary and remanded to judicial custody in Puzhal prison.
All the arrested fishemen were from the Trincomallee area in Sri Lanka. They were identified as Perera (44), Muthumalai (23), Vayagara Chanda (23), Asila Nisiri (23) and Paadha (35).
