Ranil questions police probe

Opposition UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has questioned the credibility of the police investigations into the break-in at the house of journalist Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema.
Speaking in parliament today, Wickremesinghe asked as to why an identification parade was yet to be held on the suspects arrested in connection with the incident.
He alleged that the men who had forced their way into the Bambalapitiya residence of the journalist were after documents she had on the Krrish deal.
The police had earlier insisted that the men were after her money and other valuables and did not have any other motives.
The UNP leader however said the men had wanted to silence the journalist and prevent her from exposing information on the deal.
Government Minister Dinesh Gunawardena responded by saying that police investigations were continuing and the suspects had been detained for further questioning.
He said that the men had stolen cash including some foreign currency and that they were wanted over various robberies.
The Minister insisted that the government is firm on protecting journalists and ensuring media freedom. (Colombo Gazette)
